BEAUMONT, Texas — A Jefferson County jail inmate died after intervening in a fight between two others on Nov. 17, and his death has been ruled a homicide, according to Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office officials.
Chief John Shauberger said the man, whose name has not been released, was in custody for failing to register as a sex offender. The incident began inside the jail’s Medium Assaultive Dorm, where two inmates who knew each other from before they were in jail started fighting. It is unknown what prompted the altercation.
Shauberger said the inmate who died attempted to step in. Jail staff began CPR and called EMS after the man was injured. He was resuscitated at the jail and taken to a hospital, where he later died.
