Iowa's U.S. senators joined most of their their Republican colleagues in rejecting a bill to extend expiring Obamacare subsidies while backing a dueling health care proposal that also failed to advance — leaving little time to stop health care premiums from spiking next year for millions of Obamacare enrollees.

The failed Thursday, Dec. 11, vote on the Obamacare subsidies, scheduled by Republicans in November to persuade Democrats to end the longest-ever government shutdown , gives lawmakers virtually no time before their holiday break to soften the approaching financial blow.
