Fire management crews in the Pacific Northwest are keeping the flames under control—on purpose.

The Bureau of Land Management says its prescribed burn season has already treated more than 18,000 acres since September.

These controlled burns help reduce hazardous fuels, improve wildlife habitat, and restore more resilient landscapes across Oregon and Washington. Crews carefully monitor weather and use advanced modeling to make sure each burn is safe and effective.

Officials say prescribed fire also returns nutrients to the soil, encourages new plant growth, and maintains open spaces for wildlife, timber, and grazing. While smoke can sometimes be visible, BLM specialists say it’s all part of protecting communities and keeping ecosystems healthy.
