KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — If you receive federal food benefits, you face new limits on what you can buy in the store.
Tennessee and five other states recently won permission from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to forbid SNAP recipients from using their cards to buy certain foods and drinks high in sugar.
Starting July 31, restrictions will be placed on junk food if you're paying with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, in Tennessee. The USDA approved Tennessee's SNAP waivers to exclude processed foods and beverages like soda, candy and energy drinks. Tennessee can request extensions to extend the junk food restrictions up to three times, but right now, they can't last longer than five years.
