ALTON, Maine — Alton Elementary School went on lockdown on Thursday after a report to the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office of an armed man nearby.

Around 8:10 a.m., a caller reported seeing a man carrying a rifle and possibly pointing at passing cars on Bennoch Road near the intersection of Alton Tannery Road, according to a social media post from the sheriff's office.

Deputies immediately went to the area to find the armed man and notified school officials, who initiated the lockdown.

The sheriff's office determined through an investigation that the man received a ride from the area to possibly Bangor, the post said. Other witnesses did not report seeing a rifle.
