Newport News is about to throw big money at the creation of an event designed to attract some big names in music and business innovation to promote the city as a cultural destination.
City Council approved a $3.03 million grant Tuesday to help launch a “major music festival” over Memorial Day weekend, May 23-25, next year. The money allocated to the project comes from a year-end surplus, according to the city’s news release.
“This festival marks the next step in Newport News’ growth as we compete for regional tourism dollars,” Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones said in the release. “By strategically investing in economic development, we are creating an event that highlights future projects in our city, with a goal of generating more than $3 m
