City police have begun issuing their own unique identification numbers to autos plying across Ahmedabad, a first-of-its-kind initiative designed to plug a dangerous loophole in crime detection.

The move follows multiple cases where RTO registration plates, often fixed low on the rear bumper, became so dusty, dented or faded that they turned unreadable on CCTV, particularly during night hours. This has repeatedly crippled police investigations in cases where passengers—particularly women, seniors and minors—were assaulted or robbed in autos or subjected to more serious offences.

Kalupur case proved the point
