YORK COUNTY, Neb. (KOLN) - A central Nebraska nursing assistant hired to take care of an elderly woman with dementia was arrested after allegedly stealing more than $40,000 from the patient.
On Nov. 14, a woman reported to the York County Sheriff’s Office that she had noticed a large amount of unauthorized transactions totaling to over $40,000 leaving her elderly mother’s checking account. The mother also has dementia.
The woman told investigators that in October 2024, she and her brother hired 39-year-old Heather Smith to take care of their mother as a certified nursing assistant to help with things like hygiene and cleaning.
She also said that her brother had given Smith a debit card to their mother’s checking account to purchase necessary groceries and cleaning items.
