Two months after a stray bullet changed her life, Aleyha Fernandez is learning how to live on her own again.

The 23-year-old was walking down Dudley Street in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood with her boyfriend when gunfire erupted on Oct. 8 .

A bullet struck her spine, leaving her paralyzed from the chest down.

"I remember asking God, 'Please — I just got my life together. This shouldn't be the way my life ends,'" Fernandez said. A rapper suspected of shooting an innocent bystander at a Boston restaurant, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down, was in court to face charges.
