ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Soda, candy and other snacks are now set to be banned from purchase through the state’s SNAP program after a move by federal officials this week.

Beginning next fall, recipients of SNAP, sometimes referred to as food stamps, will have to use cash to buy junk food after the USDA granted a waiver this week.

“What is the point of food stamps if it’s just for ‘real food,” said Hannah Moore.

Hannah Moore believes she and other SNAP recipients should be able to go into the grocery store and buy whatever they like.

“That’s not even cool, like why they do that?” said Moore.

Beginning next October, soda, candy, pre-packaged sweets, prepared desserts and juice with less than half natural fruit or vegetable juice will not be allowed to be purchased on SNAP cards.
