The Central government told the Rajya Sabha on Thursday that courts across the country are burdened with more than 5.49 crore pending cases. In a written reply, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said the backlog is rising steadily from the Supreme Court to the lower courts.
According to updated government data (as of December 8), the Supreme Court has 90,897 pending cases. The 25 High Courts together are dealing with 63,63,406 pending matters, while the lower courts carry the heaviest load with 4,84,57,343 cases still unresolved.
