More than 600 high-value artefacts, including items from India dating back to the British colonial era, were stolen in a burglary at a Bristol museum storage facility on September 25, Avon and Somerset Police said on Thursday.
The items were taken from the British Empire and Commonwealth collection housed in the Cumberland Basin area between 1 am and 2 am. CCTV footage released this week shows four white male suspects believed to be involved in the theft.
Detective Constable Dan Burgan said, “The theft of many items which carry a significant cultural value is a significant loss for the city.” He added that many stolen objects were donations and part of a collection that provides insight into Britain’s historical ties with its former colonies.
