My last column, the one about learning to drive, must have hit a nerve with readers. I received several emails from folks telling how they learned to drive.

I just can’t resist sharing them now, knowing that learning to drive was a real challenge in the days before automatic shift, and that I wasn’t the only person to learn to drive in a cemetery.

One person wrote, “I took driving lessons in Florida. When learning to parallel park, the instructor always took me to this place that had a palm tree. I was to get the palm tree in the middle of the rear window and proceed to park. However, when I actually took the driving test, there was not a palm tree and I flunked the whole test. I did finally pass the Indiana test — without a palm tree. I have never liked to drive — and still don’t.”
