The suspect in a fatal hit-and-run in New Jersey that occured three years ago has been arrested in the Dominican Republic.
Trevon Smith, 27, of Newark, was taken into custody by authorities in the Dominican Republic on December 1, the Union County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement on Thursday. He is charged with first-degree aggravated manslaughter, second-degree leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and third-degree hindering prosecution.
The crash happened at 2:47 a.m. on Oct. 8, 2022, at the intersection of Newark Avenue and Durant Avenue in Elizabeth. When police arrived, they found a pedestrian who had been hit, but the vehicle had already left the area, authorities said.
