With recent improvements at the Arroyo Hondo Open Space, Santa Fe County is inviting hikers to take a load off and learn about the area.
Earlier this year, four new interpretive exhibits and four new benches were installed in the 86-acre open-space trail system off of Old Las Vegas Highway south of town.
The exhibits include a new welcome kiosk for the trailhead off Arroyo Hondo Road, with a frame built by Arroyo Hondo woodworker Jeff Smith, along with three trailside exhibits that detail landscape features, area geology, local cactus species and the history of the Arroyo Hondo Irrigation Project.
The benches were paid for by Eagle Scout Eddie Blick and matching funds from the Arroyo Hondo Land Trust and installed by the county trail maintenance crew, with the help of Blick and other Sa
