LOUISVILLE, Ky. — There are many ways to love the guitar — the sound, the look, the wood, the feel.

TJ Burch is fond of making them.

“These are two students, husband and wife, and their last name is Carlson,” Burch said, pointing to works in progress.

Burch also enjoys teaching others to build their own guitars. He is a luthier.

“There’s no authority that bestows that label on anybody, but I do build guitars, and I think I build good guitars,” he said.

He builds in his basement.

“I teach classes two at a time — two students at a time is the max,” he said.

A chance encounter with a Hollywood producer at a Louisville music festival resulted in one of his most unique commissions.

“Yeah, yeah, like an internationally famous actor, director,” Burch said.
