NEEDHAM, Mass. —
Hundreds of thousands of Massachusetts residents could see their cost of health care skyrocket after lawmakers voted against extending tax credits for the Affordable Care Act subsidies on Thursday.
The subsidies are set to expire at the end of the year.
"It's going to affect at least 24,000 people in my district that rely on the ACA," said Massachusetts Congressman Stephen Lynch (D).
He said the change will be dramatic.
"An average couple that might be paying $5,000 a year now for healthcare under the ACA is going to be faced with a bill that's probably $20,ooo to $21,000," Lynch said.
The proposal put forth by the Democrats looked to extend the subsidies by three years, but was voted down.
