Thank you for Chiara Profenna’s article, which accurately portrayed the solemnity of the faith vigil outside the U.S. Immigration and Customers Enforcement facility in Portland and the heartfelt concerns of protestors, (“ Portland faith leaders hold Blue Christmas vigil outside ICE facility, ” Dec. 2). I was one of them.

Why are people of faith taking to the streets? Jesus prioritized the vulnerable and marginalized, rather than the established religious and political order of his day. He preached that bringing God’s kingdom to earth - compassion, love, justice and mercy - should be the calling of his followers. He did not hesitate to speak out against the prevailing power structures, even to the point of losing his life.
