A sheriff has slammed a restaurant’s plea to be fined a mere £500 over a horrific fire pit accident that left a 10-year-old boy with severe burns. ‌

The child and his sister had been toasting marshmallows when a 16-year-old waitress poured liquid fuel over the campfire- style structure to relight it. This caused him to be caught up in a "burst of flames". ‌

A doctor told the boy's parents that had he not been wearing glasses he would probably have been blinded. The shocking incident happened at Monterey Jack's in Airdrie, Lanarkshire. ‌

The company admitted two charges under the Health and Safety at Work Act following the accident in November 2018. It was due to be sentenced at Airdrie Sheriff Court today.
