It had seemed inevitable for quite some time and on Friday morning Rogers Communications finally made it official by signing Blue Jays president and chief executive officer Mark Shapiro to a long-term contract extension.

Shapiro left the Cleveland Guardians to join the Jays at the end of the 2015 season on a five-year deal. The veteran front-office executive signed on for another five years in 2020 and he has now agreed to stick around for at least five more. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The extension hardly comes as a surprise. Shapiro previously stated his desire to remain in Toronto and it would have been a shock to see Rogers not offer him a new deal after the Jays recently came within a couple inches of winning their first World Series since 1993.
