LAUREL, Miss. (WDAM) - Thousands of Mississippians use space heaters daily during the winter.

Dixie Electric Communications Manager Amanda Mills said that over time, it can cost you more than using a central heat unit.

“They pull a lot of electricity, much more than central heat, especially if used for prolonged periods of time”, says Mills. “If you have central heat, you want to let it do its job.”

Ellisville Fire Department Chief/Jones County Fire Coordinator, Kyle Brooks said that space heaters come with fire risks.

“Space heaters cause numerous house fires every year, whether it’s campers, mobile homes, or house fires,” Brooks said. “It is very common for space heaters to be the cause of structural fires.”
