Anyone with a National Insurance number has received an urgent alert from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). In a recent message, HMRC has stressed the necessity to "keep it safe".

This crucial identifier could be exploited for identity theft and fraudulent activities, including fake benefit applications or securing loans without authorisation. Through social media platform X, HMRC warned: "Need your National Insurance number for your new job?

"Remember to keep it safe and only share it when you need to. Download the HMRC app today."
