Karen was born on December 5, 1945 in Omaha, NE, to Daniel Peterson and Virginia Booker. Her mother passed away when she was nine months old. She grew up in Sioux Falls, SD, raised by her father and step-mother, Eva Larson.

In her early adulthood, Karen served proudly in the United States Air Force as a medic—an experience that nurtured her desire to help others. At 19, she joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a decision that shaped much of her faith and direction.
