A vehicle stop in Chelmsford in July that produced an impaired driving charge has ended with the driver pleading to the lesser charge of careless driving.

“I apologize for my actions,” William Barrett, 73, told Ontario Court Justice Graham Jenner in Sudbury court.

Justice Jenner told Barrett that when he drove after consuming alcohol, “that puts yourself and others in danger.”

Accepting a joint sentencing submission by the Crown and defence lawyer Michael Venturi, Jenner issued a $1,000 fine and a 15-month probation order.

The order includes the conditions that Barrett complete the province’s Back on Track program and not drive with any alcohol in his system.
