Baltimore,MD [KWWL] — A federal judge in Maryland ordered the immediate release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from ICE custody.

Garcia walked out of the facility just hours after the order and returned to Maryland. He was mistakenly deported to El Salvador in March but was later brought back to the U.S. to face human smuggling charges.

Since his return, the Trump administration has struggled to find a new country for Garcia. Recently, they announced plans to deport him to Liberia.

A Homeland Security spokesperson criticized the judge's order as "naked judicial activism" and stated that the department would fight the decision in court.
