In September 1862, more than 22,000 Americans fell during the Battle of Antietam in Sharpsburg, Maryland. Victory teetered between Robert E. Lee’s Confederate forces and George B McClellan’s Union army. The North ultimately repelled the Southern invasion, emboldening President Abe Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring freedom for American slaves.
