NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — All northbound lanes were closed at the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel in Newport News for about four hours on Friday as crews responded to a tractor-trailer crash with a fatality, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The crash happened at mile marker 3.7 near Roanoke Avenue, according to VDOT.

Virginia State Police said one person died, and another person was taken to the hospital with injuries. Four vehicles were involved in the crash.

Traffic delays were significant as VDOT said there was a 4-mile backup. A detour was in place at Roanoke Avenue.

At 8:36 p.m., VDOT announced the incident had been cleared , and the northbound lanes on I-664 had reopened.

The crash remains under investigation by Virginia State Police.
