Excuse me if this Stuart Skinner for Tristan Jarry goalie trade smacks of just moving the deck chairs, not categorically improving the Edmonton Oilers ’ lot in life in net.
This is just a trade to make a trade.
The hope with some in the “Skinner-has-to-go” angry fan base is Jarry might be a Dwayne Roloson 2006 saviour in net. But that may be fantasy, fairytale stuff. He is a different goalie, that’s all. A good goalie but not a great one, at least on the surface. And the glare for Jarry will never be harsher than it is in a rabid Canadian market, with a fan base that has seen its team get to the last two Cup finals and will accept very little less.
The more astute play would have been to find a tag-team partner for Skinner who could push him more than good guy, backup Calvin Pickard,
