WASHINGTON D.C., DC — With the next Winter Olympic Games on the horizon, the 1980 Miracle on Ice hockey team is getting honored by Congress.

The Americans defeated the heavily favored Soviet Union in February of 1980, during the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. The Soviets had won gold four times and were considered the hockey superpower. The defeat by Team USA is an iconic moment in sports history, and was also a welcome reprieve for American patriotism.

On Friday, that team was awarded three Congressional Gold Medals, one of which will be displayed at the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth, Minnesota.

The bill was authored by Rep. Pete Stauber (R-Minnesota). On Friday, he said on social media, "I'm so proud to honor the exceptional 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team
