The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday approved an allocation of ₹11,728 crore for conducting the 2027 Census, which will begin in February 2027 and be carried out in two phases.

The massive exercise will be India’s first decennial Census to include caste enumeration.

The second phase, population enumeration, will take place in February 2027.

However, in Ladakh and snowbound, non-synchronous areas of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the population count will be carried out earlier, in September 2026.

The Cabinet noted that Census 2027 will, for the first time, electronically capture caste data during the Population Enumeration phase.
