Democrat Doug Jones campaign for Alabama's top office is officially underway.
Jones kicked off his gubernatorial campaign in Birmingham Friday night in an event at The Theodore featuring performances by Grammy-winning country star Jason Isbell and DJ Slim Robb.
Jones is an attorney who has served several political offices over the years, including U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Alabama (1997-2001) and U.S. senator (2018-2021). As of his announcement, he is the last Democrat to have won a statewide office in Alabama.
He announced his campaign back in November, saying in part, "This office is so important to the folks of Alabama. They deserve a governor that is going to fight for them."
An open seat
The seat will become open in November of 2026, when Gov. Kay Ivey reaches
