HANOVER, N.H. (WCAX) - Dartmouth College was founded on this day in 1769 when Eleazar Wheelock was issued a royal charter for the school.

Wheelock named the institution after the 2nd Earl of Dartmouth, who had been a key supporter of Wheelock.

Dartmouth’s original mission was to provide a Christian and liberal arts education for both English settlers and Native Americans. The college is the ninth oldest institution of higher learning in the United States.

On this day in 2013, organizers of the Gift of Life Marathon in Rutland set their sights on breaking the single-day blood donation record of 1,968 pints, which had been set in Manchester, New Hampshire.

The people of Rutland smashed that record, donating 2,350 pints that day. The record still stands as the largest one-day blood drive.
