The Sikkim Government will soon forward a report to the Central Government seeking Scheduled Tribe (ST) recognition for 12 left-out communities in the state. The move comes a day after the Sikkim Legislative Assembly unanimously approved the Sikkim State High-Level Committee (SSHLC) report on the matter.
Addressing the State Level Sakewa Celebration 2025 at Syari Constituency on Saturday, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang said that while Bhutia, Lepcha, Limboo, and Tamang communities currently enjoy ST status, other Nepali-origin communities in similar social and economic conditions should also be granted recognition.
