BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - You are being reminded to take safety seriously ahead of possible freezing weather in the Baton Rouge area.

According to the Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office, the main safety step you should take is to ensure your home has a working smoke alarm. Taking some time to check alarms can prevent a potential tragedy.

So far in 2025, 82 people have lost their lives in 63 fires in Louisiana. Officials said that only two homes where the fires took place had a working smoke alarm.

Before cold temperatures arrive, you should press the test button on your home’s smoke alarms. If the alarm does not work, you should replace the battery or replace the entire unit with a newer one that comes with 10-year sealed lithium batteries.
