Three Americans have died, and three more were wounded after a deadly ambush by an ISIS gunman near Palmyra, Syria, on Saturday, Dec. 13, according to Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell.
The attack killed two US Army soldiers and a civilian US interpreter as they conducted a key leader engagement in support of ongoing counterterrorism operations.
Three other service members were also wounded and taken by helicopter to the al-Tanf garrison for treatment, Parnell said. The soldiers’ names and units are being withheld until 24 hours after next of kin have been notified.
US Central Command confirmed the attack was carried out by a lone ISIS gunman, who was "engaged and killed" by partner forces. Two members of the Syrian security forces were also reportedly wounded during the ambush.
The deaths mark the first US casualties in Syria since the fall of the Assad government a year ago. The mission near Palmyra was part of ongoing efforts to counter ISIS and other terrorist groups in the region.
In a statement, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth vowed a forceful response, saying, "The savage who perpetrated this attack was killed by partner forces. Let it be known, if you target Americans — anywhere in the world — you will spend the rest of your brief, anxious life knowing the United States will hunt you, find you, and ruthlessly kill you."
The Pentagon said the incident remains under active investigation.
