A man was shot by a Pennsylvania State Police trooper after fleeing a stolen vehicle and running from officers during a pursuit in Pittsburgh on Saturday morning, Dec. 13, state police said.
The incident unfolded just before 9:40 a.m. when a state patrol trooper spotted a stolen vehicle traveling eastbound on Interstate 376, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
Troopers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver refused to stop and sped off, police said.
The pursuit continued into the city of Pittsburgh, ending on Crane Avenue near the intersection with Saw Mill Run Boulevard, investigators said.
At that location, the male driver exited the vehicle and ran from troopers on foot. During the foot pursuit, a state trooper discharged their service weapon, striking the man, state police said.
The suspect was treated at the scene and transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later released. He has since been returned to Pennsylvania State Police custody, authorities said.
No law enforcement officers were injured, and there is no threat to the public, police said.
The driver has not been identified, and no charges have been announced at this time.
Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the shooting and will present their findings to the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office, according to police.
Crane Avenue is expected to remain closed for an extended period on Saturday while investigators process the scene and conduct interviews. State police are urging drivers to use alternate routes.
Additional information will be released as it becomes available, authorities said.
