Bill Guerin was not expecting to receive a call from Vancouver Canucks president Jim Rutherford on a Friday night, but the Minnesota Wild general manager didn’t hesitate to take a break from making meatballs and complete a franchise-altering trade.

A day after acquiring Quinn Hughes from the Canucks, Guerin spoke with reporters on Saturday about the process involved to get the deal done, and how he expects his new No. 1 defenceman to elevate Minnesota’s push towards a Stanley Cup.

It was a sizeable deal for both teams — one that Guerin believes will benefit both teams — with the Wild giving up forwards Marco Rossi and Liam Ohgren, defenceman Zeev Buium and their first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
