The city of McMinnville issued a statement Thanksgiving week that said aggressive operations by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in the area don’t align with its values — but many residents insist the city needs to go further.
Residents packed a city council meeting Tuesday and called for McMinnville’s mayor, Kim Morris, and the city council to follow the lead of Hillsboro, Forest Grove, Portland and other governments in the region by declaring an official state of emergency over ICE’s actions.
So far, McMinnville officials have resisted. Morris said the city is determined that McMinnville remain “a place where people feel safe, supported, and treated with dignity” but that it needed to seek “legal guidance” from the Oregon Department of Justice on how best it could
