Poteet and West Mesquite have each been playoff teams in each of the last three seasons, but it is the Pirates that have been able to claim the district hardware, capturing the last three 14-5A championships.

The district season got underway on Friday and Poteet sent an early statement that it is still the team to beat, grabbing an early lead and holding off a late push to claim a 55-39 victory at West Mesquite High School.
