PROVIDENCE, R.I. —

At least two people were killed and eight others injured in a shooting Saturday at Brown University .

Shortly after reports of the shooting , the university said a suspect was in custody, but later retracted that statement. At this time, the shooter is at large.

What we know

The shooting happened just after 4 p.m. at the Barus & Holley building, which houses the School of Engineering and the Physics Department, where students were gathering for their exams.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed that two people died and eight others were injured. Among the eight injured, six were critically injured but stable, one person is in critical condition, and one person is stable, according to Rhode Island Hospital.
