A corner shop has been given an alcohol licence despite local residents raising concerns it could spark increased antisocial behaviour.

Durham County Council's licensing committee gave the green light to the application from Londis on Chapel View in West Rainton during a hearing on Wednesday (December 10).

The shop owners received approval to sell alcohol between 9am and 8:30pm each day, though they had initially sought permission to trade until 10pm.

The new business will open inside a former Methodist chapel, which was recently used as a gym. But residents warned the store, which is located close to bungalows housing elderly and vulnerable residents, is not in keeping with the area.
