Certain trends in crime over the last 15 years can be drawn out and partially explained, but the numbers don’t always reflect a larger pattern. Even those who have worked in law enforcement for decades can’t speak to the direct causes in sudden shifts in the crime rates over the last decade-and-a-half, but they can react to them.
