A bystander who tackled and disarmed a gun from one of the two alleged gunmen who killed at least 11 people in a mass shooting at Bondi beach, Sydney, has been hailed as a "genuine hero."

Twelve people - including one of the gunmen - died after what police described as a " terrorism incident" unfolded at an event taking place to mark the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.

Footage on social media circulated showing a bystander running up to another man who is holding a rifle.

In the video, he tackles the man from behind as he fires it, takes the rifle out of his hands then points it at him. The alleged gunman backs away and the man places the gun against a tree.
