This past Nov. 13 at the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flagstaff (BBBSF) Big Brunch fundraiser, I had the honor of sharing my “why” for being a “Big” volunteer over the past 25 years. I spoke about the profound influence two of my own mentors had on me — my New York neighbor Abe Simon and Flagstaff’s Nat White, both pillars of their running communities.

After the fundraiser, I found myself wondering: What makes runners such wonderful mentors? To explore this, I reached out to several runners who volunteer as mentors with BBBSF and Girls on the Run of Northern Arizona (GOTRNA). Copy article link Sign up for our newsletters
