Iowa/Ill. (KWQC) - The Environmental Protection Agency has approved two pesticides that some believe contain forever chemicals.

The decision has sparked concerns among scientists and activists about potential health and environmental impacts.

The pesticides will be used on lettuce, broccoli, and potatoes.

EPA disputes classification

The EPA says these chemicals aren’t PFAS, but international scientific and regulatory bodies classify them as such.

PFAS are known as “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down and can build up in the environment and the body, leading to health problems and contaminating water, soil, and food over time.

A professor at Purdue University who studies how PFAS move through crops said these two newly approved chemicals pose a low risk to human health.
