1933: Tennis player Neil Fraser was born in Melbourne. Fraser was the last man to complete the Triple Crown, winning the singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles at a Grand Slam event simultaneously in 1959 and 1960. The title was won twice in a row (both times at the National Tennis Championships, now known as the U.S. Open). No male player has achieved this record at any Grand Slam tournament since. In 1984 he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.


1935: The Australian dessert pavlova was named after ballet dancer Anna Pavlova. Pavlova is a traditional Australian dessert made with a meringue base and topped with whipped cream and fresh fruit such as kiwi, passion fruit and strawberries. Harry Naire of the Perth Hotel was said to have named it "Pavlova" in honor of visiting Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova.


1952: The Montebello Islands became the testing site for Britain's first atomic bomb. Operation Hurricane was conducted 350 meters off the coast of Trimouille Island. The plutonium implosion bomb exploded in the hull of HMS Plym, a 1,370-ton river-class frigate anchored in 12 meters of water. The resulting blast left a saucer-shaped crater on the seabed 6 meters deep and 300 meters wide.


1985: The Australian Formula One Grand Prix became a round of the FIA Formula One World Championship, with the final race of the season being held in Adelaide. The circuit was challenging, demanding and difficult, with frequent battles of attrition, and the entire event was very popular with drivers, teams and fans. Whenever the team came to Adelaide they enjoyed a party atmosphere.


2023: Victoria’s Treasurer has announced an expansion of the levy on vacant residential land to cover the entire state from 1 January 2025. The tax currently only applies to vacant residential properties that have been vacant for six months in Melbourne's inner and central suburbs, at a rate of 1 percent of the total value of the property, including on-site buildings. The bill was intended to increase housing supply.
