1962: Rugby player David Campese was born in Queanbeyan. He was a former Australian Rugby League player (1982-1996) who was named "Man of the Tournament" at the 1991 Rugby World Cup where he tied for the tournament's scoring lead with six touchdowns. He retired in 1996 and was awarded an Order of Australia in 2002 for his services to Australian rugby.


1986: High Court of Australia Judge Lionel Murphy died. In the courtroom, Murphy was known for his activism and judicial positivity. In addition to his time as a legislator, Murphy had a lifelong interest in science. Australian National University astronomers named N86 in the Large Magellanic Cloud the "Lionel Murphy SNR" in recognition of Murphy's interest in science.


2002: Xiang Huanyun, a 36-year-old student, armed with several pistols, walked into the economics classroom on the sixth floor of Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, and opened fire. Two students died and five others were injured in the tragedy. Xiang Huanyun was charged with two counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder.


2014: Australia's 21st Prime Minister Edward Gough Whitlam died. During his tenure as prime minister, his government began a massive legislative social reform program that was forward-looking and progressive in many respects. His memorial service was held at Sydney Town Hall on 5 November 2014, officiated by Kerry O'Brien. The two-hour memorial service attracted 1,000 invited guests and 900 other spectators.


2023: Australian politician Bill Hayden died. He served as Australia's 21st Governor-General from 1989 to 1996. In his capacity as Governor-General, Hayden also served as an Honorary Medal of the Order of Australia and a Companion of the Order of Australia. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese marked his death by giving Hayden a state funeral.
