NEW LONDON, Conn. (WFSB) - A man died after an attack at a residential care facility in New London last month.

Police say the victim, 42-year-old Lance W. Allen, passed away.

28-year-old Matthew Ellis was taken into custody Monday in connection with the incident and was charged with 1st degree assault.

The attack happened on July 7th inside one of the apartments at Briarcliff Manor on Colman Street.

Police were first called to the apartment at around 10:14 p.m.

They found Allen unconscious and badly beaten.

He was brought to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital with serious face injuries.

Police did not believe that it was a random attack.

Investigators in head to toe protective suits were seen removing evidence from the Briarcliff Manor.
