Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg will reportedly sit out for the remainder of the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to veteran reporter Marc Stein.
Flagg appeared in the Mavericks' first two games, averaging 20.5 points, five rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals on 35.7% shooting from the field. The team went 1-1 with Flagg on the court after defeating the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday and losing to the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday.
The decision to shut Flagg down came after the No. 1 pick dropped a game-high 31 points, four rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot against the Spurs. He is one of four players to score at least 30 points in a game in Las Vegas this year.
"I have confirmed this was Cooper Flagg's last appearance in the summer league," Stein said on the "DLLS Dallas Mavericks Podcast" on Saturday. "He is not scheduled to play Monday (against the Charlotte Hornets). He goes out with a monster 31 points."
The Mavericks allowed Flagg to log substantial minutes after playing 31 minutes in each contest (out of a possible 40 minutes in summer league games). The team appeared comfortable with him playing in longer stretches, with Flagg rarely looking tired on the court.
The 18-year-old played as the primary ballhandler and back-to-the-basket for stretches during his debut on Thursday. On Saturday, Flagg faced up more on offense and managed to get downhill and to the free-throw line for 13 attempts, two fewer than the Spurs as a team.
The organization recognized that Flagg showcased enough across 62 minutes of action and didn't need him to play again. The two appearances enabled Flagg to get a taste of what is to come at the next level as he prepares for a highly anticipated rookie campaign.
