Two women were shot and killed at a Kentucky church on Sunday after a suspect fled there following a violent encounter with law enforcement. The incident unfolded around 11:36 a.m. at the Richmond Road Baptist Church in Lexington, Kentucky.

Authorities reported that the suspect first shot a Kentucky State Police trooper near Blue Grass Airport. The trooper had pulled over a vehicle on Terminal Drive when the suspect opened fire, wounding the officer. The trooper is currently in stable condition and receiving medical treatment.

After shooting the trooper, the suspect fled the scene and carjacked another vehicle. Officers tracked the suspect to the church, where he opened fire on churchgoers. Four people were shot in total, including two women who were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims were identified as a 72-year-old woman and a 32-year-old woman. Two men were also injured; one is in critical condition while the other is stable.

The suspect was shot and killed by responding officers at the church. Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers confirmed that three officers discharged their weapons during the incident. The exact circumstances surrounding the suspect's death are still under investigation.

Weathers noted that preliminary information suggests the suspect may have had a connection to individuals at the church. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have secured the crime scene, which is expected to remain active for some time.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear expressed his condolences, stating, "Please pray for everyone affected by these senseless acts of violence, and let’s give thanks for the swift response by the Lexington Police Department and Kentucky State Police."

The Richmond Road Baptist Church is described as a tight-knit community, with many attendees being related or long-time friends. Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn emphasized the close bonds within the congregation, stating, "This church was a small church. The majority of the individuals that attend the church there are related biologically, some way or another."

In light of the tragedy, state officials have called for prayers for the victims and their families. Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman condemned the violence, stating, "Today, violence invaded the Lord’s House. We go to houses of worship to gather in fellowship, unite in faith, and reach toward our Creator."

As the investigation continues, police have assured the public that they will provide updates as more information becomes available. The community is left to grapple with the aftermath of this tragic event.
